A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to collect a rare set of racing cards that honored some of racing's greats, though some perhaps more obscure than others. They came in a special black imprinted logo binder featuring 44 drivers and an index card. In collector's books this card set books between $500.00 to $650.00 IF you can find someone that wants to part with them. For me, racing card sets are an invaluable way to research racing's past. Realizing this set is very hard to find and they should be shared, I've decided to show them on the internet. By the way, my cards are the real thing, being purchased from a well known card dealer source with a Certificate of Authentication. The COA cannot be shown on the website because it can be copied (yes, even with a watermark...).

Here's a story about the set found at NASCAR.com.

Q: I have two sets of 45 cards each. They were put out courtesy of Winners Circle Drug Awareness Inc. in 1989. These sets are both Series A Cards (1989). These include NASCAR drivers such as Lee Petty, Fred Lorenzen, Tom Pistone, Tiny Lund, etc. The top left corner of the cards has a banner that reads "Great Names In Racing." I was wondering how much these cards would be worth now.-Scott

A: This is the best trading card question I've seen in a long time. The Winners Circle set is one of the most collectible ever. These cards were hard to come by. They were distributed by Winners Circle to kids in the Carolinas as part of a drug awareness program, and they were given out at the Winner's Circle tent at a few race tracks. It has been years since I have heard of one of these sets being sold on the secondary market. But from a standpoint of collectibility, I personally think a complete set is worth $600-650.

It is important to note that there were two versions of the Lee Petty card. One has "NASCAR" on the back; the other doesn't. Reportedly, only about 150 cards without NASCAR made it into circulation. The "Lee Petty without NASCAR" card is probably worth about $500 alone. Hence, the price-per-set I quoted does not include that card. On the downside, many of the Winners Circle cards were reportedly counterfeited during the early 1990s, so it is important to know you have the real thing.
